      John Rutter's Christmas playlist

Today, conductor, choral composer and one of the UK’s most-loved musicians shares his festive playlist with us.

I start the day with Bach’s Christmas cantata Gloria in Excelsis, a reworking of some of the B Minor Mass – those trumpets and drums lift the spirits. My other must-hear is the broadcast repeat of the Christmas Eve Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols from King’s College, Cambridge. His present successor Stephen Cleobury has commissioned a new carol each year from many leading composers, Arvo Pärt and Judith Weir among them. My favourite is Bob Chilcott’s Shepherd’s Carol, which goes to the heart of Christmas in the same way as Darke’s evergreen In the Bleak Midwinter.

For the rest, an eclectic mix including the celestial John Sheppard, and the music of my friends John Tavener, the King’s Singers, and George Shearing.
