Paul Freeman, the founder of the Chicago Sinfonetta, is dead at age 79. The Sinfonetta announced Freeman’s death on its website, saying the conductor had been fighting several ailments in recent years. He retired in 2011. The Australian singer-songwriter accepted the JW Williamson award, thanking and paying tribute to the people who have supported his 35-year career
Singer-songwriter Paul Kelly has been honoured for a lifetime of music-making and community activism at the 2015 Helpmann awards, in a glitzy ceremony at Sydney’s Capitol theatre that hit some surprisingly political notes.
Accepting the JW Williamson award, the Helpmanns’ highest honour, Kelly paid tribute to the many individuals who had supported his 35-year career. “There are quite a few people here tonight who have taken many of those steps with me,” he said in an emotional speech. “I hope we can take a whole lot more together.”Continue reading...

Mami Wata , Africa’s answer to the mermaids and sirens sprinkled throughout folklore the world over, rises from the waters and sways to the beat of hand drums. “Dey use dem bad medicine to scare, to bring you down,” she sings, her voice punctuated by stringed instruments, an electric guitar and a steel pan that gives the sound a haunting edge.
