Andy Karzas presents this tribute to one of the greatest divas of the 20th century, soprano Magda Olivero. It includes commercial recordings, performance segments, and commentary. Olivero reached her 100th birthday earlier this year and, by the way, sang a few notes in public to celebrate it! Originally broadcast on From the Recording Horn several years ago, this program has been re-mastered and revised to reflect and honor Olivero's extraordinary achievement on the opera stage. Included are arias from operas by Verdi, Puccini, Giordano, and her mentor Cilea. She's also heard in duets with tenors Beniamino Gigli and Mario del Monaco. Olivero is perhaps the last great verismo soprano, and Andy's CD offers a generous sampling of her inimitable art.

For many years, Transom editor Sydney Lewis worked side by side with Studs Terkel on his radio show and his books. For this hour, produced in a seamless blend of documentary and reminiscence, Syd brought together a crew of Studs' WFMT co-workers who, in turn, brought great stories, along with wonderful, previously-unheard tape of Studs himself. Sydney is an oral historian, and like Studs, not a skilled technician, but she overcame her fear of digital recorders and ProTools in order to craft this lovely eulogy to America's greatest listener.

In celebration of Chopin, Deutsche Grammophon presents an entire CD of previously unreleased radio recordings from 1959 and 1967 of Argerich performing Chopin.
