I'm 67 and not an expert on music, but I am trying to improve my understanding of it. If any of you have ideas which would improve my skills, I would be grateful for you to post them. I took notes during Hailstork's Epitaph, and I am sure I wasn't very accurate. However, perhaps you can think of some things which would have improved my understanding. What I thought I heard was as follows:
First, a hollow emptiness, and then some sad feelings began to come in, then back to hollow, then sad feelings coming in more strongly. Then there seemed to be just a bare hint of a little light. That was followed by an increase in intensity of the emotions, perhaps trying handle the tolling bells, which however yet remained separate. Finally, an increase to an almost oceanic feeling.

Lots of contemporary AfAm composers worth listening to. One I know well is Trevor Weston, now teaching at Drew Univ
in NJ, and of the best known is Anthony Davis, a composer of many operas, among other things
