Thank you, Thank you, Bill McGlaughlin, for this wonderful week with Bach's St. Matthew's Passion. I love this piece, both for the music and for the devotional aspect (chorale responses, arias, etc). And you made it even richer and more meaningful. Thank you again.
Almost 50 years ago when my husband was doing graduate work at the Free University in Amsterdam, I joined a local choir from several churches (in Amstelveen) to sing the St. Matthew's, in German, of course. So this week I got out my old score, and followed along, piece by piece. It was a wonderful passion week observance for me. And how you enriched it, with all your musical observations--like the final chord, e.g.

I am surprised that there has been no discussion about the Passion Bach programming this week. I was first introduced the St. Matthew Passion while a student at St. Johns College in Santa Fe. We were introduced to Schutz's Passion first before we were enveloped in the Bach. That was many years ago and it has remained a touchstone for consolation for me ever since. Tangentially related to this is a film that I also found full of consolation that was about our relationship to Bach: The Silence Before Bach. There are no words that can do this film justice. It evokes the awe, reverence, mystery, genius, myth and joy that we can be engulfed in when listening to Bach. I wish there were a highly interactive website that invited us to engage with Bach's music and thought in a way that would enlarge our comprehension of what Bach did and does.
