Thank you, Bill, for this week's topic. I have loved violin concerti all of my life, and it such a joy to feel that I am not the only one. I was totally absorbed in them as a child and I was so happy to be given a violin by my uncle and so I started to learn at age fourteen...a little late but still a joy. I started out in beginner's orchestra and got to be part of the orchestra when we played the Mendlesohn concerto. It is wonderful to feel included in your audience.

I heard the wild and wonderful cadenza by Schnittke that Gideon Kremer recorded 20 years ago (if I heard that right) for the Beethoven Violin Concerto.
I suppose one could object that it doesn't belong in Beethoven's time period, but I think it's a laudable tribute to Schnittke - and Alban Berg. For the end of it quotes Berg's violin concerto, just at the point that Bill pointed out the circling of F# by G and F natural. I am pretty sure this is correct and makes it even more interesting and quite a statement.
