Russia was on the Julian calendar until 1922. When Tchaikovsky wrote his seasons, the Julian and Gregorian calendars were ~12 days off. The month of August in Russia ran into the second week of September according to our current calendar, hence August being the month of harvest to Tchaikovsky.
