I am familiar with musical compositions that quote national anthems or national tunes, such as God Save the King, the old Austrian anthem later known as Deutschland Über Alles, La Marseillaise, and the Star-Spangled Banner. But I must admit you surprised me, Bill, when this morning (Nov. 22) you played Lukas Foss' "Elegy for Anne Frank" with a very clear quote from the Nazi song "Die Fahne Hoch," (Raise High the Banner) also known as "The Horst Wessel Song." It was the march tune played by a brass ensemble toward the end of Foss' piece. I don't know if you identified it in your introductory statement to the piece. Did you? Anyway, thank you for playing that composition, which I heard for the very first time in my 75-year life.
