Jazz pianist Dave Brubeck died today. His obituary in The New York Times says that he wrote "a concerto grosso for 45-piece ensemble ... an oratorio and four cantatas, a mass, two ballets and works for jazz combo with orchestra. Most of his commissioned pieces from the late ’60s on were classical works, many with religious or social themes."
I propose a series on jazz musicians who have also explored classical forms. Duke Ellington comes to mind.
The program also could deal with the cross-pollination of jazz and classical. Plenty of examples there. Think about it.
Meanwhile, I would be happy to hear from you an appraisal of Brubeck, one of my favorite musicians. Somewhere in my basement are several of his LPs, including the very famous "Time Out," containing his signature tune "Take Five."
