Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra
Since its inception in 1959, the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra has consistently received critical acclaim for artistic excellence. Today, the MSO continues to reach new heights under the baton of its fifth music director, Andreas Delfs, who celebrated his 10th anniversary with the MSO in the 2006/07 season.
The Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra is the only professional orchestra in the state, which has risen to its position of national prominence through the dedication of its 88 full-time musicians, its 150 all-volunteer chorus, and the support of the people of Milwaukee. Known for their flexibility and responsiveness, the chorus has appeared with the MSO in concert on public television and in recorded performances broadcast on radio stations throughout North America each season.
Under the dynamic leadership of Maestro Andreas Delfs, the orchestra has reached new heights, and continues to expand musically on its strong artistic foundations. It has received rave reviews for performances while on tour in Europe, Japan, Carnegie Hall and other venues around the United States. In 1999, Mr. Delfs took the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra on a historic tour to Cuba, the first major American orchestra to perform there in 37 years, and drew national attention with profiles by The New York Times, Associated Press, CNN, NPR and the major US television news networks.
Due to the overwhelming success of the tour, the Milwaukee Press Club presented Mr. Delfs with the 1999 "Headliner of the Year" award, stating that "Andreas Delfs and the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra were the most important news in Wisconsin in 1999."
