The WFMT Radio Network invites your listeners to travel to Santa Fe, New Mexico through the sounds of thirteen new one-hour radio concerts from the SANTA FE CHAMBER MUSIC FESTIVAL. Now in its eighth season, the program has been broadcast on 12,345 stations across the United States and around the world.
One of the world's leading performing arts festivals, the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival is known for its enduring commitment to tradition, artistic excellence, innovation, and vision. Our weekly radio series reflects the Festival's high standards and varied repertoire by presenting superbly recorded concerts and recitals by some of today's greatest musical artists.
The 2013 Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival radio series features performances recorded in 2012 in Santa Fe, New Mexico during this celebrated music festival's 40th anniversary summer season. Each broadcast hour typically contains 50 minutes of music comprised of two works representing chamber music's core repertoire. The Festival also remains dedicated to lesser known composers and compositions, and to commissioning new works.
Veteran WFMT announcer Kerry Frumkin hosts the series along with Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival artistic director, Marc Neikrug. Many of the performers provide additional commentary as they describe their experiences at the Festival and the music they've played here.
Here are some highlights from the 2013 Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival radio series:
" Cellist Lynn Harrell opens the radio series as the featured soloist in Vivaldi's Concerto for Cello, Strings & Continuo in E minor. That first program also includes Harrell in collaboration with violinist Benny Kim and pianist Jeremy Denk and their performance of the Piano Trio in B-flat Major, D. 898 by Schubert. The season concludes with Harrell, this time with the Tokyo String Quartet, performing Schubert's final work for chamber ensemble, the String Quintet in C Major, D. 956.
" When New York Philharmonic Music Director, Alan Gilbert, agreed to serve as the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival's 2012 Artist-in-Residence, he asked to conduct two of Arnold Schoenberg's jewel-like and rarely performed chamber symphonies. In Week 3, Gilbert leads an ensemble of Festival musicians in Schoenberg's 1906 Chamber Symphony No. 1 in E Major, Op. 9. He returns in Week 6 to conduct the Chamber Symphony No. 2 in E-flat Minor, Op. 38 which Schoenberg began in 1908 and completed in 1939.
" In Week 2, an ensemble comprised of many stellar Festival musicians headed by William Preucil & Robert Ingliss bring forth Johann Sebastian Bach's Concerto for Violin & Oboe in C Minor, BWV 1060. Later in the series, pianist Inon Barnatan is the featured soloist in Bach's Piano Concerto No. 7 in G Minor, BWV 1058.
" In addition to many gems of the chamber repertoire, this season of Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival radio concerts includes two world premières commissioned by the Festival especially for its 40th anniversary season. In Week 7, Finnish composer and pianist Magnus Lindberg performs his own Acequia Madre with clarinetist Chen Halevi. Then in Week 10, Todd Levy, Teng Li, and Haochen Zhang gather to perform Snow and Snow for Clarinet, Viola & Piano by the young Scottish composer Helen Grime.
" Violinist Arnold Steinhardt and cellist Peter Wiley, both members of the retired Guarneri String Quartet, join violinist Ida Kavafian and violist Steven Tenenbom on stage for a performance of the String Quartet in A Minor, music the great violinist and composer Fritz Kreisler wrote in 1921. Jeremy Denk joins with the Tokyo String Quartet to play Elgar's Piano Quintet in A Minor, Op. 84. Clarinetist David Shifrin and pianist Anne Marie McDermott present Leonard Bernstein's 1942 Clarinet Sonata. … and much more.
Some of the other outstanding performers heard in this series are: bassoon players Theodore Soluri and Nancy Goeres; cellists Eric Kim, Gary Hoffman and Anssi Karttunen; clarinetists Anthony McGill and Michael Rusinek; horn players Philip Myers, Julia Pilant and Julie Landsman; oboists Liang Wang and Kyle Mustain; pianists Jon Kimura Parker and Haochen Zhang; percussionist David Tolen; violinists Soovin Kim, Harvey de Souza, Jennifer Gilbert, and Jennifer Frautschi; soprano Tony Arnold; and the Orion String Quartet.
