The world's first international music festival and the most renowned, the Salzburg Festival this year continued its over 90-year history of producing and presenting great orchestras, soloists, opera, and theatre in the historic and picturesque Austrian town where Mozart was born.  This year's highlights include a special Vienna Philharmonic concert with conductor Franz Welser-Möst: two performances by the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra, one led by Sir Colin Davis, with soloist Susan Graham, and one with young conductor Ainars Rubikis, this year's recipient of the Nestlé Young Conductors Award;  a performance of the Salzburg Mozarteum Orchestra led by Trevor Pinnock; a recital of songs by Kurt Weill by soprano Angela Denoke; a recital by cellist Yo-Yo Ma; and chamber music by such major artists as pianist Mitsuko Uchida, counter-tenor Ian Bostridge,  oboist Albrecht Mayer, flutist Emmanuel Pahud, and violinist Renaud Capuçon. In addition, stations have the option of taking the complete opera Macbeth by Verdi with Riccardo Muti conducting the Vienna Philharmonic, and a program of contemporary music by Karlheinz Stockhausen, performed by pianist Marino Formenti.

The WFMT Radio Network is offering live performances from the Salzburg Festival.  Salzburg Festival 2011 focused on the music of Gustav Mahler, and we'll include works by Mahler and his contemporaries Alexander Zemlinsky, Richard Strauss and Johann Strauss Jr. (as arranged for chamber ensemble by Alban Berg and Arnold Schönberg), as well as Mahler's own arrangement for orchestra of a Schubert String Quartet.

Salzburg Festival 2011 will include commentary by conductors, administrators and performers at this years Festival, as well as conversations with concert-goers and critics from around the globe. The world's stars have been drawn to Salzburg for decades, not only for the large-scale concerts and exposure, but for the intimacy and acoustic excellence of the historic Mozarteum Hall and the new House for Mozart.

We know you will want to join us for this rare opportunity to visit this remarkable festival, Salzburg Festival 2011!
