Music Mountain is delighted to present the 2011 Music Mountain Season, one of the most exciting and innovative in their 82 years.  Music Mountain is the oldest continuing summer chamber music festival in the United States, celebrating its 82nd year from Gordon Hall in Connecticut, its 37th year of national broadcasts, and now in its 14th season of syndication on the WFMT Radio Network.  This year, we are back to our usual 16-week, 2-hour format.

Beginning with the 2010 season, Music Mountain has made several changes:  you can now access these programs via PRX, FTP and CDs.  For CDs, please contact Carol Martinez at 773-279-2112 or email cmartinez@wfmt.com.  Here is your FTP information:

Each year, Music Mountain presents the great quartet and quintet masterpieces by leading performers before a public audience by performers from many different nations around the world.

This season of Music Mountain's chamber music presents established String Quartets with dedicated musicians committed to the teaching and performance of chamber music.  They come from all over the world and represent a broad range of traditions and styles.  Some of these performers keep coming back to play for many years, and others will be making their Music Mountain debuts.  This year we will be presenting music by the Cassatt String Quartet, Daedalus String Quartet, Amernet String Quartet, Colorado String Quartet, St. Petersburg String Quartet, Shanghai String Quartet, Penderecki String Quartet, Voxare String Quartet, Ariana String Quartet and the Harlem String Quartet.

Gordon Hall, which is considered one of the truly great concert halls in the United States, was built by Sears Roebuck in 1930.  "It's a magnificent hall, made entirely of wood, and designed specifically for string quartets," Nick Gordon explains.  "The colonial style structure was conceived as a violin.  It vibrates.  When you touch your finger to the bow and the string vibrates, the hall vibrates in turn.  It's a hall that has to be experienced to be appreciated."

Gordon Hall is lush and rich with splendid acoustics, providing resonant sound to every seat, and on the lawn where listeners can savor the music and nature at the same time.  Founded by Jacques Gordon in 1930, it is America's leading showcase for string quartets and the string quartet literature.  The permanent home of the Gordon String Quartet, one of the leading string quartets of its generation, Music Mountain's mission, then and now, is education and performance of chamber music: more specifically, the string quartet.  To accomplish this mission, Music Mountain brings together the finest quartets and assisting artists and the most comprehensive repertory in a series of concerts each year, from June to September.

The New York Times has written: "For string quartets, Music Mountain is the place to be."
The Hartford Current has described Music Mountain as "...the string quartet capital of the universe."

Edward R. Hamilton, America's largest discount bookseller by mail, is the national underwriter for this free series.  The Music Mountain web site www.musicmountain.org has been linked to ArkivMusic.com which will permit your listeners to buy CDs of any of the works that are played in these chamber music concert broadcasts.
