George Preston will serve as afternoon drive-time announcer

Chicago - March 9, 2009 - Steve Robinson, Senior VP and General Manager of 98.7WFMT, Chicago's Classical Experience, is pleased to announce the addition of George Preston to the station's on-air team. Preston will make his WFMT debut on Monday, March 30 in the 3:00-7:00 pm afternoon drive-time slot.

Preston comes to 98.7WFMT from WNYC, New York City's primary NPR affiliate, where he most recently served as Music Director, supervising the music staff and producing a wide array of live concert broadcasts, festivals, and specials. A native of West Virginia, Preston holds music degrees from Oberlin Conservatory, New England Conservatory, and Boston University. He accidentally fell into a broadcast career some 25 years ago at WXCR, Safety Harbor, Florida, a commercial classical station serving the Tampa Bay market. He worked at WBUR in Boston for 11 years as a program host and producer, Music Director, and Assistant Program Director.

A former singer and actor, Preston performed operatic roles including Papageno in Mozart's The Magic Flute, Figaro in Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro and Rossini's The Barber of Seville, Mercutio in Gounod's Romeo & Juliet, and Demetrius in Britten's A Midsummer Night's Dream. His theatre work ranges from Fred Graham in Kiss Me Kate to Orgon in Tartuffe.

"We are very excited to welcome George to Chicago," said Robinson. "His wide-ranging experience and winning personality promise to greatly enhance the experience for our listeners," he added. "I'm thrilled to join the renowned announcing staff at 98.7WFMT, a station which I have long regarded with great admiration and respect," said Preston.
