98.7WFMT to Launch Contemporary Music Series Relevant Tones
Weekly one-hour radio program airs Saturdays at 5 pm beginning April 7
CHICAGO – March 7, 2012 – 98.7WFMT, Chicago's classical and fine arts radio station, is pleased to announce the upcoming premiere of Relevant Tones, a groundbreaking weekly series that explores the vibrant and continuing contemporary music tradition as it thrives in the 20th and 21st centuries. Hosted by Seth Boustead (Chicago-based composer and Director of Access Contemporary Music) and produced by Jesse McQuarters, Relevant Tones tracks emerging trends on the international new music scene and will be one of the nation's only classical music programs exclusively dedicated to contemporary music.
Relevant Tones will air on 98.7WFMT each Saturday at 5:00 pm beginning on April 7, and the station is proud to make this series — and all of WFMT's fine arts programming — available to a global audience via wfmt.com/streaming.
"With Relevant Tones, WFMT has given us the chance to reach new generations of listeners and redefine what it means to write classical music, without alienating listeners enthralled by the masterworks of the past," said Boustead. "This is an exciting opportunity to portray this wonderful art form as a living tradition, and I'm thrilled that WFMT is so forward-looking in its programming," he added.
"WFMT has always been a global leader in presenting contemporary music on the air, and Relevant Tones elevates that commitment to a whole new level," said McQuarters. "For audiences, this program will be one of the only places on the radio one can tune in and hear something completely new, music that they've never experienced before. It's a profound — but fun — way to explore the limitless playing field of human innovation and creativity."
Content of the first four episodes of this season of Relevant Tones includes:
- April 7 — Fresh off their 2012 Grammy win, the Chicago ensemble eighth blackbird stops by to discuss their latest album, recent premieres and performances across the globe.
- April 14 — London-based DJ, composer and entrepreneur Gabriel Prokofiev talks with Seth Boustead about composing and performing for a 21st century audience, family legacies, and the use of sampling in classical music. Includes Prokofiev's Concerto for Two Turntables and Suite for Global Junk.
- April 21 — One of Poland's most significant 20th century composers, Henryk Gorecki led a quiet revolution against the Soviet authorities through his inimitable style of mystical minimalism. We'll dedicate an hour to his music and life.
- April 28 — Seth discusses upcoming Chicago performances with composer Jacob Ter Veldhuis and Stephen Burns, Artistic Director of Fulcrum Point.
Relevant Tones is made possible in part by the generous support of Grosvenor Capital Management, Carroll Joynes and Abby O'Neil, Don Casey, Bruce Oltman, and the listener supporters of WFMT.
