Salamone Rossi was an Italian Jewish violinist and composer who set a number of Hebrew texts to music. His madrigals resemble those of his contemporary, Monteverdi. This morning the Brooklyn Philharmonic played a suite of Rossi pieces, an homage by a 20th century American composer to this Jewish musical innovator. Who wrote the “Salamone Rossi Suite”, dedicating it to the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra, of which he was the music director in the 1970s?
