Black History Month is the focus on Soundtrack this February. Today we feature the music of Duke Ellington including the 1965 Frank Sinatra film, Assault on A Queen, and one of Duke’s symphonic compositions honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Three Black Kings.

And for an early Valentine treat , Chicago Tribune film critic Michael Phillips has a classic love theme by Nino Rota, and Soundtrack producer Greg Broderick offers his own Theme of Love from FFIV

Duke Ellington:  selections from the original motion picture soundtrack for Assault on a Queen (1965); Solitude, performed by pianist Lara Downs, and Take The A Train, Daniel Barenboim and members of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.  Joann Falletta leads the Buffalo Philharmonic in a recording of Ellington’s Three Black Kings.

Nino Rota: A Time for Us, from Romeo and Juliet (1968).

Theme of Love, from Final Fantasy IV, in a recording by the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra.
