Bartolomé Esteban Murillo: The Prodigal Son Feasting

Known as the “Spanish Palestrina,” Tomás Luis de Victoria has been called the greatest of all Iberian composers. Corund, the Swiss vocal ensemble founded in Lucerne in 1993 and specializing in sacred music of the Renaissance and Baroque, presents a concert of sacred works by Tomás Luis. The Requiem Mass, composed for the funeral of the Empress Maria, is the featured work on this edition of Baroque&Before. The program opens with madrigals by this most famous composer of 17th-century Spain.

Tonight’s program was recorded live in concert June 27, 2014 at St. Lawrence’s Church, as part of Switzerland’s St. Gallen Festival, the annual summer arts festival founded in 1977. Thanks to WFMT’s association with the European Broadcasting Union, we’re able to offer tonight’s program as a stream for thirty days following the broadcast. A blue “Listen” button will appear when the stream is accessible.
