François Couperin knew all too well that the artist, immersed in the uncertainties of his world, must depend on the protection of a patron who, in return, enhances his social image as a promoter of the arts. This principle defined the modus vivendi of musicians in the Early Modern Period, and Couperin was no exception. Harpsichordist Christophe Rousset brings us selections from Couperin’s L’Art de toucher le clavecin, written for illustrious members of the French court.

About the harpsichord: French harpsichord made by Keith Hill in 2001 from a model by Pascal Taskin built in 1769. Instrument measuring 233 cm, with two keyboards and decorated wood, with six legs finished in goat’s hoof. Two keyboards of extension F1 to G6, with three registers (2×8‘ and 1×4’) and lute, with 415/440 Hz transposer.
