LIVE: David Hou, 16, piano

On Saturday’s live broadcast, we feature 16 year old pianist David Hou of Hawthorn Woods, Illinois. David is currently a junior at Adlai E. Stevenson High School and a Music Institute of Chicago Academy Alum. David made his solo debut with the Fox Valley Symphony Orchestra (Appleton, WI) in February 2012, performing Franz Liszt’s Piano Concerto No. 1 in E-flat Major. David has performed concerts in major Chicago music venues, such as Symphony Center, Harris Theater, and Ravinia’s Bennett-Gordon Hall.  He has also given personal concerts in many retirement homes across the Chicago area. He is the winner of the 2009 ISMTA State District Audition Elementary Division, the winner of the 2010 Walgreens National Concerto Competition Junior Piano Open Division, and the winner of the 2011 Chicago Steinway Young Artist Solo Competition. His piano quartet and trio have made appearances in the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition in 2013 and 2014 as semifinalists and quarterfinalists. He was also one of the youngest semifinalists in the Gina Bachauer International Piano Competition in 2012, a finalist in the 2015 Crain-Maling Foundation Chicago Symphony Orchestra Youth Auditions, and a semifinalist in the 2016 Cooper International Piano Competition. Most recently, he was the first prize winner of 2016 Arthur Fraser International Piano Competition. David will perform with the South Carolina Philharmonic in the 2017/18 season. David previously studied piano with Brenda Huang and Matt Hagle. He now studies with Alan Chow, professor of piano at Northwestern University.
