Composed during his time at the court of Frederick the Great in Berlin, Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach’s sonatas provided the court gambist with ample opportunities to display both virtuosity and sensitivity. The viola da gamba was going out of fashion when the forward-looking Bach composed these works, however, they represent some of the finest and most expressive music in the instrument’s repertoire. German viola da gambist Johanna Rose is a member of Accademia del Piacere and has worked with many ensembles. This recording with harpsichordist Javier Núñez is her debut solo album.
