Meet the Host

Michael Phillips, the Chicago Tribune’s film critic, has hosted The Film Score on WFMT since 2016, and several of the one-hour specials have enjoyed nationwide exposure via the WFMT Radio Network. Phillips has covered film, theater, arts and culture for the Tribune since 2002. Before that, he wrote for the Los Angeles Times, the St. Paul Pioneer Press, the San Diego Union-Tribune, the Dallas Times-Herald, and the Twin Cities weekly City Pages, where he served as arts editor. Phillips hosted about 100 episodes of the long-running nationally syndicated TV program “At the Movies,” first opposite Richard Roeper, and later with A.O. Scott. More recently, he presented about 100 films on Turner Classic Movies, from Citizen Kane to Escape from New York. He is a frequent guest on the flagship movie podcast Filmspotting, also heard on Chicago Public Radio. He lives in Chicago with his wife, Tribune columnist Heidi Stevens, and their three fascinating children.
