The vocal ensemble Cantus’ latest release of world premieres marks their full-length album debut on Signum Classics. In Manifesto, Cantus takes a nuanced look at identity and relationships — with friends, lovers, family, and the divine. The album takes its name from “Manifesto,” a minimalistic piece from Pulitzer Prize-winning composer David Lang set to text from Google’s auto-complete list of the query “I want to be with someone who…” As one of the nation’s few full-time vocal ensembles, Cantus has grown in prominence with its distinctive approach to music-making. Working without a conductor, the members rehearse and perform as chamber musicians, each contributing to the entirety of the artistic process.
