Today on Introductions, we feature 17-year-old Rosie Wang, winner of the 2019 Crain-Maling Foundation CSO Young Artists Competition. As part of her prize package, Rosie was due to perform a live recital on WFMT in June 2020. In this program, we feature chamber recordings made last year, plus her prize-winning performance from 2019, first broadcast on Music in Chicago.

Rosie Wang has been playing the flute since she was 9. Some notable accomplishments include performing as a soloist with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in October 2021, winning first prize at the 2021 Great Composers International Competition, and second prize at the 2021 Enkor International Music Competition. She has studied flute with Jennifer Gunn and Hideko Amano.

Aside from flute, Rosie is involved in business activities, photography and digital design, community service, and more. Other accomplishments include being a multiple-time regional and state champion and national award winner in the Future Business Leaders of America leadership conferences, placing top 10 at the International Network For Teaching Entrepreneurship World Series of Innovation competition, and receiving a Scholastic Art & Writing Awards Gold Key for her photography and digital art.

Rosie was recently named the 2022 Distinguished Young Woman of Illinois, and will represent Illinois at the national program at Mobile, Alabama in June. Rosie is a co-founder of Sharing The Stand, a nonprofit that delivers free online music lessons to students worldwide, and the co-president of the Adlai E Stevenson High School Chapter of Crescendo for a Cause, a national 501c3 PVSA certifying nonprofit which aims to use music performance as a vehicle for advocacy.
