In 1991, the preeminent bass player Gary Karr treated Studs Terkel to stories of his life and career as a seventh-generation virtuoso instrumentalist. He described the influence and mentorship of mezzo Jennie Tourel, how he acquired his Amati from the wife of Serge Koussevitzky, and his conviction that the bass is a singing instrument made out of chocolate.
