The Portuguese guitar is an instrument associated with the traditional music from Portugal, fado. Pedro Henriques da Silva takes it beyond that role using a multitude of unusual techniques and sonorities on his new album which includes his own concerto for the instrument. The term “transclassical” was coined by Henriques da Silva’s wife and collaborator, Argentine composer and pianist Lucía Caruso, describing a style of music based on classical music techniques and incorporating improvisation and elements from different cultures around the world. The rest of the album includes Caruso’s Light and Wind Piano Concerto and Folia, and an arrangement by Henriques da Silva of the Beatles Here Comes the Sun.
