The Calidore String Quartet has received the BBC Music Magazine’s 2024 Chamber Award for its record The Late Quartets of Beethoven.

Released in February 2023, the album showcases Ludwig van Beethoven’s String Quartets No. 12-16.

The New York-based ensemble is slated to complete Beethoven’s slate of quartets in two complementary albums — highlighting the composer’s early and middle-career entries — this year and next.

The Beethoven quartets will make up a lion’s share of the ensemble’s concertizing this season, including an extended stint at the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center.

Formed in 2010 in Los Angeles, the ensemble fast established itself as a major player in chamber music. The group has garnered prizes from such prestigious contests as the Fischoff and M-Prize competitions and was awarded the Avery Fisher Career Grant in 2018.

Ryan Meehan, one of the ensemble’s violinists, was born in Florida but moved to Chicago to study with the legendary violin pedagogues Roland and Almita Vamos at the Academy of the Music Institute of Chicago. Meehan appeared on WFMT’s Introductions when he was a student.
