Album cover for vivere string quartet: prayer for Ukraine
Prayer for Ukraine

2024PR-2402-CDChamber Music

Founded in 2010 by students of the Lviv National Music Academy, Vivere String Quartet showcases three Ukrainian composers: Zoltan Almashi, Vasyl Barvinsky, and Hanna Havrylets. The program includes Maria’s City, an homage to Mariupol, composed by Zoltan Almashi from a bomb shelter in Kyiv; two works by Hanna Havrylets, who died from lack of medical care at the onset of the invasion; and Vasyl Barvinsky’s String Quartet inspired by Ukrainian folk melodies and rhythms. The album was produced amid displacement, bombings, and separation from family members, with members of the quartet traveling to the United States for their recording sessions.

Tracklist

Vasyl Barvinsky: “Prayer”
Barvinsky: String Quartet (complete + 2 mvmts)
Zoltan Almashi: “Maria’s City (Mariupol)”
