A highlight of the album, for me, is the second movement of Chicago-based composer Marc Mellits’s Black Moon Suite, titled Selene & Cynthia. Each instrument becomes a painter’s brush, sweeping across a vast white canvas to create an atmosphere that feels otherworldly.

Black Moon Trio (violinist Khelsey Zarraga, hornist Parker Nelson, and pianist Jeremy Vigil) is an ensemble committed to collaboratively affecting positive change in communities through chamber music. Founded in 2022, the trio champions underrepresented voices in their programming and commissions and aims to prove classical music is for everyone by engaging diverse audiences, youth, and artists of every type.

Black Moon Trio has presented performances at numerous Chicago public schools and the Chicago Cultural Center and is currently Ensemble-In-Residence at Brushwood Center at Ryerson Woods in Riverwoods, Illinois. Their debut album features accessible and appealing music by contemporary composers Marc Mellits, Griffin Candey, Natalia Camargo Duarte, Miguel del Águila, and José Elizondo.
