Born December 21, 1944, conductor Michael Tilson Thomas is the third generation of his family to pursue an artistic career in this country. His grandparents, immigrants Boris and Bessie Thomashefsky, were founding members of the Yiddish Theater in America. His exuberant father, Ted Thomas, worked broadly in Hollywood and Broadway. In 1986, Michael Tilson Thomas and Ted Thomas (1904–1992) spent a lively hour with Studs Terkel in which they shared music and memories of their family and the American stage.
