This album spotlights Gabriel FaurĂ©’s orchestrated songs and his music for the stage, of which his suite from the incidental music for PellĂ©as et MĂ©lisande includes some of his best-loved music. Performances of FaurĂ©’s spectacular Wagnerian drama PromĂ©thĂ©e are a real rarity, while the Shylock Suite, based on Shakespeare, contains some of his most elaborate symphonic music. FaurĂ© orchestrated only a small number of his more than 100 songs. Star Irish mezzo-soprano Tara Erraught performs three of these orchestrated songs, as well as MĂ©lisande’s Song and an air from PromĂ©thĂ©e. Jean-Luc Tingaud, a specialist in both symphonic and operatic French repertoire, leads the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra.

Fauré: Pelléas et Mélisande Suite & Other Works
I’ve never met a musical take on PellĂ©as et MĂ©lisande I didn’t like. There’s a lot to love about this recording, which also includes MĂ©lisande’s Song and FaurĂ©’s criminally underrated cantata, PromĂ©thĂ©e. A must-listen for devotees of turn-of-the-century French music.
