Jaap van Zweden conducts Julia Wolfe’s Grammy-nominated composition Fire in my mouth, a dramatic account of the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire of 1911 and the fight for workplace rights for immigrant women. The words of those that protested and perished are voiced by the women of The Crossing and the Young People’s Chorus of New York City. On the second half of the program, we hear the Symphony No. 8 by Dmitri Shostakovich.
