Shortly before the start of the Jewish High Holidays, in 1962, Studs Terkel welcomed Max Janowski (1912–1991) and Basia Polischuk to his WFMT radio program. These two distinguished figures in the field of Jewish music met as students at a renowned conservatory, in Berlin, Germany, in the years before World War II. Mr. Polischuk was a violinist with a world-wide career. Mr. Janowski was an internationally respected composer of Jewish liturgical music, who also served as the longtime music director at KAM Isaiah Israel Congregation in Hyde Park in Chicago.
