Though a lesser-performed work, Gustave Charpentier’s psychoanalytical Louise nonetheless compels attention from start to finish. Its most famous aria “Depuis le jour” is a favorite among star sopranos, recorded by big names such as Maria Callas and Renée Fleming. Today’s production comes from the 2025 Salzburg Festival with soprano Elsa Dreisig in the titular role of Louise. Tenor Adam Smith is Julien, while soprano Sophie Koch and bass Nicolas Courjal play Louise’s mother and father.
