The beautiful wind instrument family features prominently in this collection of works. Two concertos shine a spotlight on often under-appreciated instruments: the piccolo and the bassoon. Paul Hindemith’s colorful symphony “Mathis der Maler,  inspired by the paintings of Matthias Grünewald, gives many important melodies to the orchestra’s wind section. Rounding out the program is the second symphony by Romantic American composer – Harvard’s first Professor of Music, John Knowles Paine.
