This week and next, the Best of Studs Terkel honors the birth anniversary of the great violinist, conductor, and musical mentor, Sir Yehudi Menuhin (1916 – 1999). He was born April 22, 1916. Karen Shaffer, biographer of the pioneering American violinist and composer Maud Powell, joins Yehudi Menuhin in this extended interview, from March 1986. The program aired shortly before Menuhin’s concert tribute to Powell. This hour holds performances Menuhin recorded over the arc of his long career. We’ll also hear the artistry of Maud Powell, music captured at the dawn of the 20th century, during the very earliest days of recorded technology.
