Tonight, on the Best of Studs Terkel, we have the second and final part of a conversation with the eminent violinist, conductor, and educator, Sir Yehudi Menuhin (1916 – 1999). Menuhin was born, on April 22, 1916. Menuhin and Karen Shaffer, biographer of the pioneering American violinist and composer Maud Powell, spoke with Studs in March 1986, shortly before Menuhin’s concert tribute to Powell. This hour also holds Menuhin’s collaborations with Jazz violinist Stéphane Grappelli and Indian sitar virtuoso Ravi Shankar. It ends with a selection of the Beethoven Violin Concerto featuring Yehudi Menuhin with the Philharmonia Orchestra under the direction of Furtwangler.
