Exploring Music with Bill McGlaughlin

Voices from the East

A single bell rings steadily, creating a calm, meditative mood. Gradually, the strings join in, playing canonic scales that shimmer through the music. This first piece in Voices from the East is 'Cantus in Memory of Benjamin Britten' by Estonian composer Arvo Pärt. Over the week, we’ll explore music by composers from the Baltic states, travel to Chistopol in western Russia, and finish in Georgia. You’ll hear works by Arvo Pärt, Sofia Gubaïdulina, and Giya Kancheli. Come join us on this musical journey!

Best of Studs Terkel

Michael Tilson Thomas and Ted Thomas (10/08/1986)

WFMT remembers Michael Tilson Thomas (1944–2026), the beloved and deeply admired American conductor, who died earlier this year. "MTT" was the third generation of his family to pursue an artistic career in this country. His grandparents, immigrants Boris and Bessie Thomashefsky, were founding members of the Yiddish Theater in America. His father, Ted Thomas, worked in Broadway and Hollywood. In 1986, Michael and Ted shared a lively hour of music and memories with Studs Terkel.
