A rarely heard opera from the great Brazilian composer Carlos Gomes, Lo Schiavo (The Slave) is a a political and social drama which brings to light the treatment of newly ‘freed’ slaves in Brazil (abolished in 1888). But its an opera too, so you also have the love story of Américo, son of Count Rodrigo, and Ilàra, who is being forced to marry another. We will hear highlights from this romantic opera.
