Longtime WFMT producer, programmer, co-host, and archivist Lois Baum passed away on Saturday, June 17, 2023, at age 87.

Lois Baum’s long and illustrious time with WFMT began in 1964. Over the course of the next 36 years, she served as WFMT’s Associate Program Director and co-hosted WFMT’s Lyric Opera radio broadcasts, among many other roles. Baum also collaborated for more than three decades with oral historian and close friend Studs Terkel on his WFMT radio program.

At the launch of the Studs Terkel Radio Archive in 2018, Lois Baum reflected, “Studs brought it up almost every day: people have more in common around the world than they think they do… I hope the voices in this wonderful archive will help us to better appreciate one another.”

WFMT is saddened by the loss of this pivotal figure in our history. We are proud to uphold her legacy for generations to come through the Studs Terkel Radio Archive.
