Brazil, Mexico and Cuba were three “jewels” in the colonial empire of the Spanish and Portuguese crowns. European musicians were imported to teach and composed in the colonies and bred a new generation of American composers. Writing music for the religious services and for the courts of the viceroys and governors and even the Portuguese king, when he moved to Brazil.
