The Chicago Sinfonietta has announced its artist in residence for the 2024-25 season, Propel.
Shermann “Dilla” Thomas is a Chicago urban historian who has built a following on social media with his engaging and passionate content. His pride towards his city is best encapsulated by his unofficial motto: “everything dope about America comes from Chicago.”
He has been recognized with appearances on the Kelly Clarkson Show and the Today Show, and he leads tours around the city. He has also given presentations at area universities including UChicago and Northwestern and spoken at Meta, Google, and more.
In his role, he’ll emcee the orchestra’s March 2025 Love Letters program and appear at the organization’s May 2025 donor event. Speaking on his new role with the ensemble, Thomas reflects that the Sinfonietta is “known for its community and camaraderie… they are driving the industry forward and changing the landscape of classical music.”
The news comes on the heels of another announcement: president and CEO Blake-Anthony Johnson will depart the orchestra in January following a successful 5-year tenure at the Sinfonietta’s helm. The orchestra’s 2023-2024 season featured composer Kathryn Bostic as artist-in-residence.
