Acclaimed conductor Christoph von Dohnányi, celebrated for his prolific work in opera and orchestral music, died on September 6, 2025 at the age of 95.
Born in Berlin on September 8, 1929, Dohnányi became Germany’s youngest Music Director at 28 when he was appointed to lead the Lübeck Opera. He later held posts with the Staatsorchester Kassel, WDR Symphony Orchestra Cologne, and Oper Frankfurt.
From 1984 to 2002, he served as Music Director of The Cleveland Orchestra, where he led more than a thousand concerts, oversaw the ensemble’s first tour to China, and founded its Youth Orchestra and Youth Chorus. He remained Music Director Laureate until his death.
“Christoph von Dohnányi was a superb conductor and Music Director, respected the world over,” said President and CEO of the Cleveland Orchestra André Gremillet in an online statement. “His storied family history gave him a unique musical perspective, and The Cleveland Orchestra was fortunate to have him in Cleveland for such a significant part of its history.”
Dohnányi also served as principal conductor of London’s Philharmonia Orchestra and chief conductor of Hamburg’s NDR Sinfonieorchester, while appearing regularly with the New York Philharmonic, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Orchestre de Paris, and major opera houses worldwide.
Christoph von Dohnányi leaves behind an impressive collection of albums. He recorded extensively, including 109 works with The Cleveland Orchestra, and received three Grammy nominations along with honorary doctorates from leading music schools.
