Violist JungAhn Shin and pianist Umi Garrett perform works by Go-San Baek, Ernest Bloch and York Bowen, live from the Seventeenth Church of Christ, Scientist, Chicago.
JungAhn Shin, born in Busan, South Korea, discovered her passion for the viola at a very young age. Her musical journey began at the Korea National Institute for the Gifted in Arts, where she honed her talent and ignited her love for music. At age 15, Ms. Shin relocated to Berlin, Germany, where she pursued her musical education under the mentorship of Tabea Zimmermann at the Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler Berlin, starting as a pre-college student. She then continued her bachelor’s degree with Ms. Zimmermann and is now pursuing further studies at UDK Berlin with Hartmut Rohde, expanding her musical horizons.
Ms. Shin’s performances have captivated audiences at prestigious festivals such as Kronberg Academy’s Chamber Music Connects the World, IMS Prussia Cove, and Grachten Festival, collaborating with esteemed musicians such as Steven Isserlis, Nobuko Imai, Christian Tetzlaff, and Renaud Capuçon, among others.
Umi Garrett is a highly accomplished solo, collaborative, and chamber pianist based in New York City. A first-prize winner of the Juilliard School’s Concerto Competition and a finalist at the National Chopin Piano Competition, Umi has performed numerous recitals in the United States and internationally. As a dedicated collaborator, Umi has performed at renowned competitions such as the Primrose International Viola Competition and the Sphinx Competition with prize-winners. Most recently, Umi was awarded the John Newmark Prize for Best Collaborative Pianist for her performances with finalist Nathan Meltzer at the 2023 Montreal International Violin Competition.
Umi has performed and toured with orchestras such as the Mainly Mozart Festival Orchestra, Hiroshima Symphony Orchestra, Symphony Boca Raton, Boston Symphony and Pops, Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, Wuhan Symphony Orchestra, and the New Mexico Philharmonic. Umi is also a passionate performer of new music, and has collaborated with and performed pieces by acclaimed composers such as Samuel Adler, inti figgis-vizueta, and Gabriela Smith.
