This acoustic time capsule features the first of many times that the influential singer and songwriter John Prine (1946 – 2020) visited with Studs Terkel on WFMT. The program dates back to the early 1970’s – not long after Prine first burst onto the lively Chicago folk scene, and shortly before the release of his very first album. He spoke with Studs about the time he worked as a mailman in his home town, and about coal mining, and music. He also played his Martin guitar while performing “Paradise,” “Hello in There,” “Angel From Montgomery,” and other songs now firmly embedded in the American lexicon. John Prine was born October 10, 1946, in Maywood, Illinois, and we fondly remember him on the eve of what would have been his 80th birthday.
