NEW YORK (AP) — The New York Philharmonic canceled its fall season because of the coronavirus pandemic and moved up the start of Geffen Hall’s reconstruction to take advantage of the orchestra’s absence. Philharmonic President Deborah Borda hopes to resume performances on January 6, but says the schedule is uncertain and will depend on the health situation. The Vienna Philharmonic resumed performances in Austria last weekend with just 100 people in the audience. Borda says unlike European orchestras with large government subsidies, the New York Philharmonic will need to have clearing to sell a substantial percentage of seats to make the reopening financially viable.
