"You have to know that I am a very curious musician..." said Enrique Mazzola, wearing his trademark red glasses. In September, the Italian conductor was appointed Lyric Opera of Chicago's music director designate; he'll take the baton from Sir Andrew Davis at the start of the 2020-21 season. But Mazzola is not just in town for his appointment, he is also conducting this season's performance of Verdi's Luisa Miller. In between rehearsals, WFMT interviewed Maestro Mazzola about the opera and about his plans for the future at Lyric.

Luisa Miller runs through October 31 at Lyric Opera of Chicago. Visit lyricopera.org for ticketing and information.
