Francisco Guerrero (1528-1599) was a priest and musician from Seville. Together with Cristóbal de Morales and Tomás Luis de Victoria, he was one of the three most revered composers of Spanish Renaissance polyphony. Guerrero worked for Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian II, traveling to Italy and the Holy Land. Among his sacred works, the Missa pro defunctis of 1582 takes pride of place tonight, with works by Cristóbal de Morales and Alonso Lobo de Borja rounding out tonight’s program featuring the the Cererols Choir under the direction of Marc Díaz.
