Chicago has had the good fortune of becoming the second home of Apollo’s Fire, the baroque ensemble from Cleveland. This album vividly recreates the 18th-century German coffeehouses, where concerts organized by Bach and others were incubators for new musical trends.

Inspired by the musical soirées curated by J.S. Bach, this new release from Apollo’s Fire features repertoire that is believed to have been performed at the Café Zimmerman in Leipzig. Selections include Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 4 with virtuoso soloists Alan Choo, violin, and Daphna Mor, recorder; and the Double Concerto for Oboe and Violin featuring oboist Debra Nagy and violinist Johanna Novom; the beloved “Air on a G String” from Orchestral Suite No. 3; Telemann’s swaggering and often hilarious character study Burlesque de Quixotte; and the fiery dueling violins of Vivaldi’s La Folia featuring Alan Choo and Francisco Fullana.
