Challenging traditional perceptions of classical music, Ray Chen’s new album with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Cristian Mǎcelaru juxtaposes Erich Korngold’s perennial favorite Violin Concerto with music from video games, television, Anime, and film. By transforming simple 8-bit game tunes into lush symphonic arrangements, Chen believes he can tap into the nostalgia of Generation X and Millennials who grew up with video games. Chen remarks, “This album is for all the kids who grew up. Some of them are starting to have kids of their own … We’re all digital natives – those who grew up with and around technology.”
